What is Wireless Broadband?

“Wireless Broadband” is a high-speed Internet service that provides Internet access to customers without the use of standard cabling over the “last-mile” (e.g. telephone, coax, and fiber). In addition to being faster than Dial-up, Wireless Broadband does not require a telephone line. This can make it an affordable option to standard connections.

Wireless Broadband requires a radio receiver or Subscriber Module (SM), which mounts on the client’s home or business. This SM connects to an Access Point (AP) using microwaves or radio signals at distances of 10 miles or more. The AP acts like a switch sending requests and responses between each SM and the provider.

Your distance to the nearest Access Point will determine in large part the actual speeds you achieve. The closer to the Access Point the better, as signal degrades with distance causing packet loss and latency issues. If you are at the outskirts of the service area or can’t achieve a good Line-of-Site (LOS), you might not see the full speed of your subscribed plan.

The performance of Wireless Broadband is typically better than other forms of internet connectivity. While path density from in climate weather can cause slight performance drops in extreme cases – service is almost never lost. In our area there exists the potential for severe or extreme weather which can create the need for an alignment (signal adjustment). While these occurrences are infrequent they can be rectified very easily by one of our service technicians at no cost to you. See FAQ’s for more information.

A standard installation takes about 2 hours in which a small dish will need to be mounted on top of your business. Our installations are clean and professional and we will make every attempt to mount our equipment in an aesthetically pleasing location as possible, however sometimes it is not possible due to LOS or in order to achieve maximum signal strength. Due to insurance regulations and liabilities we are unable to trim trees or erect a tower or other structure for us to mount to.  We also can’t install our services into apartment complexes without prior written consent from the owner of the property or property management group. The cost for installation to an exterior wall is $85.00. Interior wall and structured panel installations are $150.00.  In order to make our service wireless throughout your home, you will need a wireless router or access point. CGI will lease a standard router to you for $5.00 per month or an advanced router for $10.00 per month. Alternatively, CGI will sell you a SOHO router for $79.99 or an advanced router for $129.99. We also sell business class routers for those that require client and peer VPN connections, load-balancing, or additional security. Speak to a representative or your installer for details.

Speeds are measured in uncommitted burstable rates for these packages, which means they can fluctuate from time to time depending on usage and other variables outside of the control of CGI, see the FAQ section for more information. If you are planning on watching videos/gaming - you WILL need either the Gold or Platinum plans to achieve this with good quality.
